“They say my father was mad, so corrupted by evil and tainted by sin that he did what he did. I came home to find them all dead; their throats savagely cut. My sisters only five and eight were gone as well as my brother who was twelve. My mother too lay butchered in her marriage bed. The bed her children were born in.
I discovered him first, in the sitting room, floating on a sea of crimson, the bloody razor still clutched in his hand.
How pitiful I must have looked, bent down trying to wake him. Calling to him over and over: “Papa please, please wake up!”
He could not waken of course. No more was he to open his eyes, not in this world, had I not been struck mad I would have realized.
Yet madness is sometimes a mercy when shadows come to take the horror away. Please do not pull away in terror, please. I have much to confess. Just be patient, for I promise I will tell you everything. The only thing I ask in return is for you not to judge me until you hear my entire story…”
So begins a tale of vampirism, madness, obsession and devil worship as Rose Baines, only survivor of her family’s carnage, tells her story.
Fragile and badly damaged by the tragedy, she obtains a position as governess at a desolate house on the haunted moors where demons dwell.
The house and the moors have hideous secrets and yet there is love too; deep, abiding and eternal…but it comes with a price, the loss of her soul.

I loved how the author has you immediately pulled into the story. Though a good sized book at over 100,000 words, there is a wonderful pace to it which keeps you reading, drawing you into the story with every word. You’ll find yourself quickly immersed in the story, wondering what would happen next, feeling for the amazingly developed characters. The plot is superbly written, I loved how it also took the form of a mystery while you follow the detectives trying to solve the bizarre murders. You won’t be disappointed in the growing tension which builds up to a dramatic climax.
Don’t let the genre titles of horror or Christian put you off, if you love vampire stories, you’ll enjoy this book!

I thoroughly enjoyed Dance On Fire and found it totally absorbing, a terrific distraction from my ordinary life. The plot was skillfully developed and strung together with such grace, I wasn’t really sure what was going to happen in the end until the conclusion. Garcia teases the reader in a variety of directions, and, like any good mystery, although you search for clues, nothing is revealed until the end. I liked the treatment of the vampire as both light and dark, and this book dealt with both sides believably. Hope some of the characters return in the sequel.

(sorry, James, I accidentally deleted my original review!) Okay, I originally was drawn to this book simply based on its setting. What I found, however, was that this author brings such a depth to his characters and a unique perspective to the storyline, it makes it difficult to find a stopping point! I loved the way he weaves vastly different genres together so harmoniously that, rather than being ridiculous, leaves you thinking outside the box. I can’t WAIT for the sequel!

Mr. Garcia has taken the oft overdrafted “Vampire” story to a new level. I was enthralled with the storyline and characters. Being somewhat familiar with Kingsburg, CA I found myself drawn even deeper into the action as I could picture myself at the exact locations. The bridge between vampirism and christianity was an intriguing twist in the book and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every page. I certainly look forward to the sequel and future works by James.

I love what James Garcia, Jr has done with Dance on Fire. I agree with the previous reviewers that the characters are drawn with depth and substance. Garcia has a gift for dialogue that “shows” more than “tells” the reader about the characters. I was also struck by the imaginative storyline which builds tension to the dramatic, bittersweet climax. Garcia mixes a horror thriller with deep suggestions about the nature of grace and providence and leaves you thinking about these concepts long after the book is finished. Although the violence and language make this a PG-13 read, the depth of the issues addressed make it interesting and insightful for who like to mine for theological significance in a novel. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

Characters with substance that get inside your head and don’t let go. A literary ride that was exciting and enjoyable. A must for lovers of the Vampire genre, anyone who has ever spent a day or more in Kingsburg, California, and those who just love a good book. I am certain that, after the next installment, the movie will not be far behind.

The house on Blackstone Moore

Review based on epub version for the Kobo e-reader
Gothic horror. Not really my cup of tea, but Carole Gill’s novel is a smooth read from page one and onwards. Chapter one is interesting and thrusts the reader straight into the world of Rose Baines with a nice tag at the end that forces a page turn.
Coming home to see her family slaughtered by her father, see is struck weak and taken to an insane asylum to recover, where on her first night in a solo room she is abused. This is just the start of the horrors she will soon be faced with. There are sex rituals, sacrifice, vampires, demons (I like Eco, he is demented and brilliantly so), children vamps, and the leader, Louis Dartion, oh and gypsies.
All Gothic fans will love this book and Carole has created characters we can all identify with. Rose is a shy and uncomfortable around strangers and has a tendency to faint. Louis Dartion is the opposite but he too has a soft side. Some of the characters are in the story to move the plot along but most are interesting characters, like Dartion’s wife, Marta and Reverend Hobbs.
Secrets will be exposed that will rock Rose’s world and throw her life in turmoil. The amount of twists and turns this book takes will leave your head spinning and guessing until the end. And the journey Rose takes in this book is truly epic and you’ll enjoy reading her exploits and adventure late into the night.

Within the arresting pages of Carole Gill’s gothic novel, The House on Blackstone Moor, one accompanies Rose upon her epoch journey. Carole’s writing possesses a unique finesse, efficiently gracing the reader a penetrating glimpse into a sinister world of insanity, the immorality of abuse, horridness, and evil. The House on Blackstone Moor never relinquishes its spellbinding hold on its readership; from the first sentence to the last, a beguiling work of fiction, leaving the reader wistfully anticipating a sequel.
A must read!

Review by: Diane Kristen on Jan. 15, 2011 :
Before The HOUSE ON BLACKSTONE MOOR, we experienced the wicked, self-involved albeit charming vampire and his polar opposite – the long-suffering, brooding wimp with a conscience. Carole Gill’s Louis Darton is neither. In fact, he is the perfect balance between the two – a Byronic hero with substance. He endures, as the author writes, no matter what. He does so with great courage, inner strength and compassion. Now that’s seductive!
As a fan of 19th century British literature and all things gothic, I found, in House of The Blackstone Moor, all the elements I enjoy in a novel and all the elements of a classic. The moods of great works such as Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, even Dickens (a la Oliver Twist and David Copperfield) surface throughout. Carole Gill presents great narrative, well-drawn characters, and has a marvelous ear for dialogue.
While hopelessly invested in the fate of Rose Baines and her beloved Louis Darton, I read this entire book in two days. No sooner had I put it down, when an irresistible lure seemed to beckon my return. I’d have finished it in one sitting if I didn’t need to be elsewhere.
Between Darton and Satan cohort “Eco,” there is the additional element of the proverbial dark side with a twist. It brings to mind Anne Rice’s almost poetic “Memnoch The Devil” inspired by the Book of Enoch and Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost. This genre has been met and embraced in the past with great interest and sheer fascination. Carole Gill continues in that vein. She pulls it off quite skillfully with wonderfully bold and descriptive passages.
I look forward to the recently announced sequel/prequel and would love to see it all brought to life on film. The book is titillating…brilliant and 5-star spectacular. I am in awe.

im not sure where to begin, this was the most amazing story ive ever read! the characters were not only wonderful, but passionate, good nd evil, which was a great concept in this story. ill never forget these characters, they are almost real, thats how good Carole describes them. her writing is so unique, and she has a great style all her own. she has given us a true look, not only at good and evil, but at vampires as well. i can guarantee you will feel the same way once you read this novel. the twists and turns came at me from out of no where, i never saw them coming, and that just added to the beauty of this book. i would recommend this story to everyone, even if you dont think its your type of book, try it, i promise you’ll fall in love with it as i did!!!

Review by: Lori Lopez on Dec. 29, 2010 :
What Carole Gill has achieved with this Gothic novel is to transport the reader into the time-warped plight of a heroine whose sense of doom underlies a dark journey through twisted depravity and tangled horrors. From the terrible home where she is the victim of incest then her family slaughtered, to an insane asylum and onward to the sinister mansion of a very odd couple, it is a story of suspense and conflicts that do not let up until the final page. The book encompasses the theme of making difficult choices, as well as shedding light upon the important topics of child abuse and mental health. For confronting such issues — along with the plot, atmosphere, and the storyteller’s skill — I highly recommend Carole Gill’s “House On Blackstone Moor”.

Review by: Robert Nelson on Dec. 28, 2010 :
Okay: I love novels of this kind, so I would pretty much be happy with most well written stories in this genre. But this great book goes well beyond just making me happy. The sheer magnificence of the Gothic scenes and language; the characters playing off each other, every one bidding for his or her time to shine; the blending of the physical with the psyche; and the age old battle between good and evil, but with a whole new twist added to the evil, makes this a must read, don’t put it down masterpiece.
Clive Barker has some real competition now. Carole Gill has arrived. “The House On Blackstone Moor” will surely become a classic.

In addition to being an avid reader I am an author myself so I am hard on books. If I’m not happy with what I’m reading, I put it down and don’t look back. This is not the case with The House On Blackstone Moor by Carole Gill. I would highly recommend this book.

“I am a drinker of human blood and an eater of human flesh, a monster dressed in the skin of a man.” So states Charles, the main character of the novel, after being infected with a virus transmitted by an insect vector.
The Pumpkin Seed opens in India near the Nepal border in the late 17th century. A commissioned officer of the East India Company is seeking a profitable new trade route into China. Indian bandits of the Thuggie clan attempt to stop this further invasion by the British and release a plague of insects, which carry a unique virus. This organism not only infects humans, it transforms the chemical and physical nature of the host’s body. Longevity, resilience and the need to feed on human blood and flesh make the host an efficient killing machine, especially in regard to the human race. The novel follows the characters through 17th and 18th century England and India, culminating in present day Austin, Texas.
Set in the orphanages of London and in the vile body snatching trade, a host of characters, who are as despicable as their deeds, search for the truth and a cure for their malady.
The Pumpkin Seed takes us through the vices of greed, hate, love and despair and creates a modern novel that puts colonialism in the spot light and asks difficult questions about this generation’s guilt for the crimes of its ancestors. This novel is a classic vampire tale with a twist, told beautifully from the point of view of the vampire.

“Forever.” That’s the response Ben Gongliewski receives, when he asks Miranda Dandridge how long she’s been a vampire. He doesn’t expect the word “forever” in her reply, but then again, Ben never imagined meeting vampires, let alone demons and werewolves, during his time in the Polish Resistance during World War II. Far from being horrified, Ben discovers that Miranda and her friends have very useful … talents … especially when it comes to saving children from concentration camps. After all, in these desperate times, while the line between good and evil is clear, the one between heroes and monsters is very, very blurred.
The last thing Miranda wants at this point in her immortal life is a human lover, but as she and Ben perform rescue after daring rescue, she can’t help but be drawn to his passion to save his fellow Jews. As the War draws to a close Miranda must choose her love for Ben or her duty to her race. Ben is blindsided by a betrayal that no one sees coming, which leads to a danger where all hell is about to break loose … literally.

Please do yourself a favor and pick up this book. The setting and period details are amazing, the prose is elegant, and the heroine, vampire Miranda Dandridge, is classy and complex; the most unusual vampire I think I’ve ever encountered in a novel. “Hey Hollywood, this would make a great movie!”
